According to the latest data from the U.S. Fire Administration / National Fire Data Center there were twice as many fires caused by matches than those caused by lighters, but lighter fires killed and injured more people. On top of that, when age was a factor in the ignition by lighters or matches, 37% of these fires were started by juveniles between the ages of 10 and 17.
Aside from all that, matches are a pretty amazing invention though. I mean, who hasn't lit one after a visit to the commode? They're great at lighting that wick of a candle a lighter just can't reach, or throwing a bunch of matches onto lighter fluid soaked coals to get that BBQ running. Any which way you put it, I prefer a match over a lighter.
